Topham Chase Tip

The Topham Chase is always worth a watch on the second day of the Festival as it is always a very competitive handicap and 2020 will be no different as we see plenty of future Grand National horses take their chance over the Aintree fences.

What is the Topham Chase?

The Topham Chase is one a handful of races on the national hunt calendar that is run over the famed Grand National obstacles.

The race itself is a Grade 3 contest run over just north of 2m5f and offers the horses a stern test over some of the most daunting fences in equine sport.

The Topham can be an early testing ground for future Grand National horses but also acts as a big race in its own right for those equine athletes that don't have the stamina required to have a chance in the world's most famous steeplechase.

The history of the Topham Chase

First run in 1949, the Topham Chase is one of just three races during the Grand National festival over the National fences themselves and is run on the second day of the meeting.

The race has developed into a brilliant contest over the past 50 years with the Topham turning into a mini Grand National for those horses that perhaps don't have the stamina for the main race on the Saturday.

In recent years we have seen two multiple winners of the Topham Chase with Always Waining the stand out name with three famous wins for trainer Peter Bowen. Ultragold picked up two wins in the race in 2017 and 2018 for Colin Tizzard while Cadmium was a stunning winner in 2019 for Willie Mullins and Paul Townend.

What happened in the 2019 Topham Chase?

The Topham Chase was littered with top class animals in 2019 and we saw a potentially top class winner emerge in the form of the well fancied Cadmium.

The Willie Mullins trained seven-year-old gave a fantastic front running performance and took to the fences like a duck to water for the Closutton trainer. It was the performance of an animal in top class form and one of the best displays of the entire week in Liverpool.

Cadmium was too good on the day and don't be surprised if he is back in 2020 looking for the repeat.

Who is the most iconic winner of the Topham Chase?

It is a tough ask to pick just one in this category but on balance it has to be the incomparable Always Waining.

The brilliant Peter Bowen trained horse made the Topham his own as he won the race three years on the bounce between 2010-2012 to enter his name into Aintree folklore. The popular chaser used to come alive at Aintree in the spring with the Grand National fences bringing the best out of a horse who was inconsistent elsewhere.

The best trial for the Topham Chase can often be the Topham!

Repeat winners of the Topham are not uncommon with the unique test of the Grand National suiting some horses down to the ground at Aintree each season. Any horses that put themselves into the frame through the campaign will feature here as the min contenders in the betting emerge but looking at last years winner is a good starting point.
